A rare pair of Chelsea white boar's head tureen covers circa 1755

Description

  • each: 39.5cm. high; 15½in.
naturalistically modelled with ears laid back, coarse tufted mane and hair on the foreheads, their tusks protruding upwards from the sides of their mouths (one with some restoration and haircrack, the other with chip to inner flange)

Condition

One cover with chip to the inner flange which fits inside lid. approx. 2½in. by ½in. at deepest point. There is a vertical firing crack to the rim, approx. 1¼in. Minor nick to edge of one ear. Some scuffing to the glaze. One ear on the other cover has been broken off and restored. Some restoration to the other ear. Some restoration to back of head. Haircrack from flange which runs across snout, approx. 6in. length. Adjacent to this crack is a repaired chip to the flange, approx. 2in. by ½in. at deepest point.

Boar's head tureens appear in the 1755 Chelsea Sale Catalogue on the Eigth Day's Sale, Tuesday, March 18th, lot 60, `A very curious TUREEN in the form of a BOAR'S HEAD, and a beautiful dish to ditto with PROPER ORNAMENTS', and seven days later, lot 90, `A beautiful tureen in the form of a BOARS' HEAD, in a most curious dish, WITH PROPER EMBELLISHMENTS'
