Description

  • interlaced LL monograms enclosing date letter E and painter's mark of a caduceus in blue, incised marks of a quartered circle
  • 9cm., 3 1/2 in. high
each reserved with landscape vignettes depicting figures and buildings in wooded riverscape settings, enclosed by gilt foliate scrollwork cartouches, the covers with flower knops, gilt dentil rims

Condition

one with a tiny chip to finial of the cover, the other with small chip to inside cover (0.3cm x 0.2cm) and one flat chip to the uderside of the rim (0.5cm x 0.2cm)

Catalogue Note

The caduceus mark has in the past been attributed to Edmé Gomery, recorded as a bird painter between 1756-58, though David Peters (Sévres Plates and Services of the 18th century, vol.1, p.98) points out that there is no evidence to support the attribution, which he considers unlikely.
