Description
- 30cm., 11¾in.
painted with the 'Continence of Scipio', from the stories of 'Scipio and Hannibal', within a broad border of centauri and amorini, in the manner of J. Battista Franco, the reverse inscribed Come di noze a Scipione africano fu(?) la moglie di Luzio pricipe di celtebari
Provenance
Oskar Bondy collection, with paper label attached. Restituted to the heirs of Oskar Bondy in 1947
Condition
The border has been broken into seven or eight pieces and there is heavy overpainting, this makes it difficult to establish whether there are replacement sections to the rim. The areas of repainting are apparent in the photograph with only the top section clear.
There are two restored cracks which run through the central panel, the first runs from the inner rim at lower left through the join between the upper and middle of the three brown rocks and up between the soldiers in blue and orange breast plates to the face of the soldier behind, the second from the inner rim at lower right near the top of the sword through to the centre of the orange band around the top of the central tent.
Some of the restoration is beginning to crack and all is badly discoloured, also there is a small area of restoration which has come away since the photograph at the rim by the elbow of the figure at the right edge.
