Description
of lozenge section, the sides with vertical panels, each carved in low-relief with women engaged in various pursuits in a pavilion framed by rockwork and pine, the shoulder with phoenix birds amidst lotus scrolls, flanked by stylized 'dragon' flanges issuing from scrolling leaves forming handles, the tapered foot with a lotus-scroll band, all bordered by keyfret panels, the waisted cover carved with further lotus scroll bands, surmounted by a diamond-shaped finial (2)
Condition
The carving is well preserved and maintains remnants of black pigment especially to the figures' hair and to the trees. There are miniscule age chips outside of the panels, but the piece is in otherwise good condition. It is less white than depicted on the catalogue image.
