the brown ground carved and painted to the center with palace themes, the focal point centered on the seated emperor as he receives guests, some offering scepters as tributes, the robes of each figure finely painted with floral motifs or patterning, the faces articulated in detail and the hair finely combed, surrounded by a thin band of floral scrolls, all within a border with alternating birds and flowers, the reverse with five registers of cartouches enclosing floral sprays, the 'Hundred Antiques' and scholars in a garden, surrounded by a border of alternating roundels featuring cranes and shou characters
Condition
There has been considerable repainting and the beards and faces were retouched. There is expected shrinkage to the lacquer, with some long vertical cracks. Some hinges need to be replaced.
