Description

of rectangular shape, depicting a lively scene of eight lohans dispersed on an inlet landscape amidst towering rocks, trees, a stupa and pavilion, one figure accompanied by a tiger and three engaged in conversation at a footbridge, with an egret watching from mid-air, the figures of carved painted ivory applied in relief to the black lacquered ground, with finely carved details to the expressions and hands, all below an inscription, within a cinnabar lacquer border carved with foliate scrolls and a keyfret pattern, the top with a gilt handle inlaid with turquoise-colored enamel in the form of two confronting gui dragons

Condition

There is shrinkage to the black lacquer, with some cracks to the surface, the largest approximately 14 inches. Expected chips to the extremities. Areas of loss mostly to the trees and rocks, with most significant impact on the lower left-hand corner. Loss to half the characters, which have subsequently been painted on.
