Catalogue Note
Jiajing wares were often inspired by earlier Yongle designs but it is rare to find a vessel that is so close in shape and decoration. For the inspiration of this piece see the famous Yongle jar, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum. Blue and White Porcelain with Underglazed Red (I), Shanghai, 2000, pl. 42. Compare also a Yongle tankard painted with the same floral design below a band of waves published in Ming chu qinghua ci, vol.1, Beijing, 2002, pl. 32.
