well potted with flaring sides resting on a petite foot, the interior finely carved with a luxuriant peony scroll with combed detail, the exterior covered overall in an even pale celadon glaze pooling in the recesses to a deeper tone and suffused with a fine network of crackles, the exterior incised with vertical lines running from the base to the rim, the unglazed foot revealing the russet-orange body

Condition

This bowl is in fine condition overall. There are tiny speckles of kiln grit in the deep part of the interior.

A Yaozhou bowl with a similar carved peony design was included in the exhibition The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, 1998, cat.no. 65; a similar design appears also on another bowl in a Japanese collection, of angled form, illustrated in Jan Wirgin, Sung Ceramic Designs, Stockholm, 1970, pl.3k; and another bowl of this design was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 20th May 1980, lot 28.
