bidding is closed

Description

the sumptuous lingzhi emerging from a tapered foot and curving at the body to a flared rippling mouth, with an indented groove forming from the gnarled root and culminating with a ruyi head at the mouth, the root also issuing leafy tendrils clinging to the other side along with further lingzhi, the surface with textured markings, of deep celadon tone with white and russet inclusions, stand (2)

Condition

The vessel is in good overall condition with one tiny chip to the tip of a leaf (to the right side of the catalogue image). There are veins indigenous to the jade, which the carving masterfully uses as contour lines, such as along the top center leaf depicted on the catalogue image. The color of the jade is slightly more celadon-gray than the green in the catalogue.

Catalogue Note

The present jade vessel is exceptional for its size and color, as well as for the masterful execution of the carving. Compare three smaller white jade vessels also with lingzhi motif, one illustrated in Roger Keverne (ed.), Jade, London, 1995, fig. 77; another in the National Museum of History, Taiwan, illustrated in Jade: Ch'ing Dynasty Treasures, Taipei, 1997, pl. 60; and the last sold at Christie's New York, 26th March 2003, lot 24.
