A Black Lacquer 'Tixi' Two-Tiered Box and Cover Ming Dynasty, 15th Century

Estimate
30,000 - 40,000 USD
bidding is closed

Description

of circular section with the two tiers stacking neatly, deeply carved to the exterior through the successive black and five red layers with continuous pommel scrolls, save for a central quatrefoil floret on the flattened cover, the interiors and base lacquered dark brown, wood box (4)

Condition

The interior is likely an early relacquering, and surfaces with expected cracks. The tiers stack somewhat unevenly due to the cracks. For its age, this is in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

Compare a similar circular two-tiered box and cover with slightly different pommel-head design and of predominately red color from the mid-Ming period, illustrated in Lacquer Ware of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties: The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 45, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 76.
