Description

the wood votive tablet depicting dappled karashishi and one of the followers Yuden-ou colored pigments, the reverse with a later dated inscription (1622) indicating it was dedicated to Tokondo (Kofukuji) in Keicho 17

Condition

The votive was broken at the top third section and reattached. There is a 2.5 inch crack at the bottom left, minor chips to the edges, the right side (facing painting) with two small stains, probably from water. The color is still vibrant.

Catalogue Note

These votives are usually dedicated to Shinto divinities and many examples have been discovered from Kofukuji temple, the oldest of which dates back to 1521. Many young priests offered them to wish their passing of exams.
