Description

the slightly splayed foot supporting the finely potted rounded sides, incised overall with a scrolling lotus design, the foot encircled by a lappet band, the mark within a double-ring border in the central medallion of the interior

Condition

A tiny firing crack with associated iron spot (ca. 0.4mm) to the inside rim. Five pin head-sized iron spot imperfection to the glaze of interior and two to the exterior. Minor glaze scratches. The colour of the bowl is of a slightly warmer tone than in illustration. Design is slightly stronger than illustration suggests.

A Qianlong stembowl of this form and incised anhua decoration of lotus flowers, one of a pair, is illustrated in John Ayers, Chinese Ceramics from the Baur Collection, vol. 2, Geneva, 1999, pl. 304; another, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, was included in the Special Exhibition of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung Porcelain Ware, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1986, cat.no. 83; and one, formerly in the Toguri Museum, Tokyo, was sold in these rooms, 9th June 2004, lot 9.
