Catalogue Note
It is rare to find Qing vases decorated in this unusual technique whereby the design is incised, then washed over with a celadon-green slip which pools into the carving and then covered with an opaque white-glaze. A white-glazed meiping, possibly decorated in this method, from the Mottahedeh Collection, was sold in our New York rooms, 19th October 2000, lot 127.
In its form and decoration the present vase is reminiscent of Yongzheng mark and period white-glazed anhua decorated vases. For example see a Yongzheng vase, from the collection of the British Rail Pension Fund, sold in our Hong Kong rooms 28th November, 1978, lot 133, and again, 29th October 2001, lot 571.
