Description
the cover of naturally irregular form supported on a box of conforming section with a flat base, the surface textured with knots and nodes, the cover inscribed 'Qianlong Wuxu qiu ba yue' and the name 'Chen Chongben', the wood of a warm auburn-brown colour
Condition
This seal paste box is in very good condition. There is a small chip to the interior rim which has been slightly ground down. The box and cover are a perfect fit. As visible in the catalogue photograph, there is still some seal paste in the box that can be easily cleaned and replaced. The burlwood colour is slightly less red and richer than the illustration suggests.

Catalogue Note
Chen Chongben was a native of Shangqiu, Henan prefecture, obtaining the jinshi degree (highest imperial examination), in the 40th year of Qianlong's reign (1774). He was a renowned carver and calligrapher, active during the 18th century.
The inscription can be translated:
For the enjoyment of Chen Chongben, in the eighth month of Autumn in the wuxu year (corresponding to 1778) of the Qianlong reign.
