Description
the deep gently rounded sides rising from a recessed base to an incurved lipped rim, enamelled around the exterior with five large floral medallions divided by floral strapwork, all between lotus-lappet, ruyi and floral panel borders, the interior entirely plain

Condition
The jardiniere is in very good overall condition with the exception of light glaze scratches around the body; light glaze rubbing to the rim; and minor flaking to the green enamel around the base of the vessel.

A Qianlong doucai jardiniere of this design, in the Shanghai Museum, is illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hu, Shanghai, 1989, pl. 68; and another is included in Sekai toji zenshu, Tokyo, 1983, pls. 94-95, with a detail of the base, showing the Qianlong seal mark. A similar unmarked example is published in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1987, pl. 947; one was sold in our New York rooms, 28th May 1991, lot 297; and another was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th November 1979, lot 265.
