modelled by Peter Reinicke, carrying a pannier of oysters on his back and a basketful on his left arm, a shell in his right hand, wearing a black tricorn, puce jacket with gilt buttons, white apron and yellow breeches, the base modelled with gilt-edged rocailles and applied with leaves and flowers
crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base

Catalogue Note

After the drawing of 1753 by Christophe Huet, inscribed: 'No 12 Ch - verkauft Austern ... er auf'n Rücken und ein Korb in der Hand unterm Arm, an der Seite ein Burgund(?) Messe um selbten aufzumachen N 18 1753' [...sells oysters ...on his back and a basket in his hand under his arm, to the side a burgund? knife for opening them up]; quoted by Eberle, op.cit., no.51, who illustrates the drawing and another example.
