Dupetit-Thouars, Abel Aubert

bidding is closed

Description

A good group of 3 autograph letters, signed by the French admiral who made Tahiti a protectorate, written earlier in his career:

Autograph letter signed ("Abel Dupetit-Thouars"), 3 ½ pages including integral address page,  Sillery, France, 28 May [no year], to Monsieur Paujardin fils, in Reims; remains of wax seal, a small stain.

Dupetit-Thouars (1793-1864) writes to his friend, apologizing for not responding sooner but he was aboard "The Diligence" which just briefly stopped at Sillery (on the Marne), allowing him to write back—he goes on to discuss his reading and to make plans for a visit. The character of the letter suggests that it was written as a young man in the French navy (1804-1824) before becoming captain, and long before his involvement in the South Pacific.

[With:]

Autograph letter signed, one page plus integral address leaf, Paris, 3 May 1835, to Monsieur [Alcide Dessalines] d'Orbigny.

An invitation to breakfast addressed to the French naturalist d'Orbigny, who was currently in Paris, preparing his memoirs.

Du Petit-Thouars (1793-1864) was, at this time, a captain in the French Royal Navy who led several hydrographic and exploratory voyages in the South Pacific. He later occupied the Marquesas Islands, and signed a treaty with Queen Pomare of Tahiti (1842), later annexing that island for France.

Plus a fragment of another autograph letter signed, 1 ½ pages, no date, to "Janelle."
