Ainsworth (1569-1622) was a Separatist, rejecting the Church of England and seeking to recreate the life of the primitive church. Persecuted in England he fled to Amsterdam. Considered one of the finest Hebrew scholars of his day, he was part of an Amsterdam circle of English Hebraists, publishing commentaries and translations of several books of the Old Testament.
