Catalogue Note
Keith Sonnier pioneered the use of videotape as an artform, starting as early as 1970, less than a year after the first standardized-format video tape recorders became available from Japanese manufacturers (Sony would introduce the cassette VTR in 1971). He also innovated large-screen projection of videos, as well as lifting still photographic images from video, deliberately exploiting the graininess and color distortions of the medium; the present work is a very early example of this art form.
