Catalogue Note

The subject is taken from Herodotus' Stories and shows the Lydian Queen Rodolphe slowly undressing, admired by her husband King Candaule. Meanwhile, lieutenant Gyges, hidden behind a curtain, admires the nude queen.
This painting is very typical of the Pompeian style, so popular in France during the 1850-1860s, due primarily to the influence of Prince Napoleon's Pompeian House, located on Avenue Montaigne, Paris.
