Condition
The painting has been relined and the surface is stable. The painted surface has not been cleaned and restored for a very long time and is not in very good condition. there are some visible retouchings throughout the composition, some of them possibly masking old tears.
Some areas do remain in good condition like the head of the figure on the left and some parts of the dress of the virgin.
The painting under U.V. reveals the afore mentioned retouchings plus further retouchings throughout the composition.

Catalogue Note
Nicolò de' Barbari was, as his name suggests, a follower of Jacopo de' Barbari. Berenson listed a small group of works by the artist, including a signed Christ and the Adulterous Woman in the Palazzo Venezia, Rome. For a more recent discussion, please see Enrico dal Pozzolo, "Nella Selva di Nicolò de' Barbari," Saggi e Memorie di Storia dell'arte, vol. 18, 1993.
We are grateful to Everett Fahy for identifying this painting as a work by Barbari.
