Condition

Maria Peter was born in Graz in 1883 and studied in Paris with Rodin. His influence can be seen here in the way in which the clarity of the carving increases from the naturalistic base to the finely finished head of the figure. An impressive piece of good overall appearance. Wood with minor old cracks and filled cracks, consistent with typical timber expansion. Old marks and scratches. Gilt highlights to her dress and headdress. Ivory with typical minor cracks. Small plug of timber to the reverse now affixed with a modern screw - this is most likely to access the pin securing the ivory to the base. A striking piece of good overall appearance. Please note that this lot contains ivory which may be subject to export and import restrictions. For example, ivory cannot be imported into the United States. Your attention is drawn to the Endangered Species section in the Guide for Prospective Buyers at the back of the catalogue (Section 4).
