Condition

A highly decorative pair of panels which appear to have been removed from a building and bear faint signs of a mortar or plaster around the edges. As is typical of this very soft material, there are flakes to the glaze to corners and edges and to some raised areas of the decoration which is in high relief. There is an old glued repair to the bottom left hand corner of the first panel as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. This travels up the back of the panel for approx 7in. and there is another glued repair to the back of the panel, approx 5in. long to the top left hand corner. These are not visible from the front. There are some glued repairs to the base of the second panel - again, these are not visible from the front of the piece. There is some crazing to the glaze in places but this is not unsightly.

Catalogue Note

These panels are smaller versions of those produced to decorate the exterior of the Café Riche in Paris which were commissioned by the architect Albert Ballu (1849 - 1939).  The originals can now be found in the Rouen Museum.

The ornate decoration of the café, which included mosaic panels, was completed in 1894 and dismatled in 1898. The Café Riche was a popular haunt of artists at the time and Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Sisley and Degas were known to meet there.
