Catalogue Note
The spider was a popular motif on Daum cameo glass but the very large and prominent spider on this vase is unusual. Unlike Gallé, Daum did not tend to use poetic quotations but with regard to another vase decorated with spiders and nettles a verse provided inspiration, `I like the spider and I like the nettle, because they are unloved and because no-one looks on them with sympathy, rather everyone with reproval, at their doleful wishes' (See Noël Daum, Daum, Mastery of Glass, Lausanne 1985, p.56.)
