Description
- an ivory relief of St Peter and St Paul flanking the host
inscribed around LOVVADO+SEIA+OSANTISSIMO+SACRAMENTO
Condition
Apart from the outer frame the overall condition is good cand onsistent with age with vertical fissures in the grain of the ivory. Pierced for suspension with two holes to the right and left of the tabernacle and the letters Nand T possibly reattached as there is discolouration from old glue: this can easily be removed.. The outer frame has two sections missing at the top. On the left side of the framework the top section and a bottom section have been replaced and the bottom edge and bottom right edge strengthened with wood behind. Catalogue Note
It is interesting to note that the eucharistic eulogy Lovado seia osantissimo sacramento is also found on an Indo-portuguese Mass table commissioned by the Jesuits, illustrated by Codrington and listed as in the India Museum. The same inscription is also found in Japan where it originated with the Jesuit conversions to Catholicism in the 17th century.
