Description

  • A gilt metal sardonyx mounted ewer dish
with repoussé auricular scrolls enclosing numerous sardonyx panels of varying shapes and with bevelled edges mounted within shaped framework

Condition

It has been suggested that the dish is of Neapolitan origin. The overall condition is good with some agate panels loose in particular one panel on the outer rim where it has lost its frame work: this is visible at eight o'clock in the catalogue photograph. Also on the outer rim the heart shaped panel at six o'clock is cracked and a further oval panel to the left is cracked with a section missing. Each panel appears to have its pendant from the same stone opposing and a few do not and may be later replacements.Within the central section one panel has lost its upper part as visible in catalogue photograph. A few traces of gilding missing on outer rim revealing the copper beneath but the gilding appears original.

Catalogue Note

The naturalistic style with foliate tendrils and floral knops developed in French 17th century goldsmiths' work and jewellery design and was propagated by a number of French designs dating for the most part between 1619 and 1635. Compare also with the framework mounting of the sardonyx on this dish with those on the foot of the silver gilt mounted sardonyx salver in the Louvre.  Dating from 1630-1635 it first entered Cardinal Mazarin's collection in 1653.
