Catalogue Note
These herm figures, formerly the supports for a large mantle, are carved in high relief and reflect a Genoese tradition which became popular in the middle of the sixteenth century. Note the herm figures incorporated into the design for the Charles V triumphal arch (1533) in Genoa shown in the drawing by Perino del Vaga, now in the Courtauld Gallery and illustrated by Armani. The present herms can be closely compared with supports of the mantlepiece by Gio Giacomo Paracca, "il Vasoldo", after designs by Giovanni Battista Costello dated 1607 sold in these rooms 29th October 2003 lot 161.
