Catalogue Note
Mentioned in no fewer than five publications, this delicately cast bronze can be closely compared with another cast in the Bode Museum which retains its original wings but dispenses with the sash in the present example. The Berlin cast, inv.no.8723, was previously attributed by Bode and Planiscig to Roccatagliata, and Raggio proposed Tiziano Aspetti as the bronze caster. Present opinion places it in a North Italian, probably Venetian workshop of the second half of the 16th century. The model functions as a holy water stoup.
