Description

  • three enamelled silver appliques from a processional cross
  • late 14th/early 15th century
one of square section with Christ in Majesty flanked by angels, two of quatrefoils with Adam and an angel carrying a crown (3)

Condition

There is enamel loss as is visible in the catalogue photograph as detailed. The square section with Chist in Majesty: at each corner and to the right of Christ's halo three of the finials have been reattached. The quatrefoils have losses as well in particular around the attachment holes and above Adam's head. On all three pieces the enamel has dulled. Scratches and scuffs consistent with age.

Catalogue Note

The distinctive crosshatching  on the quatrefoil plaques is a feature in Catalonian enamels found on altar crosses in the area dating from the second half of the 14th and in to the 15th century.
