Catalogue Note
This neo-classical seated figure of Hercules encompasses characteristics found both in Italian as well as French 18th century sculpture. Dating from the second half of the 18th century, similarities in composition and treatment can be observed in works by Jean-Jacques Caffieri, such as his well known Rivergod from 1759 (Louvre MR1773) which exists in marble as well as a terracotta sketch with variations. The work of the Swedish sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814) who is reputed for his finely modelled terracottas of male nudes, appears to be stylistically close to this seated Hercules, in particular the group of Otryades from 1779 in the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm (NMSk454).
