Catalogue Note

The plates depict Queen Ino poisoning the grain, numbered 1 and Jason taking leave of his uncle King Pelias, numbered 5. The borders are composed of interlinked scrolls and chariots interspersed with frolicking putti and satyrs. These scenes from the story of Jason are taken from engravings by René Boyvin after drawings by Léonard Thiry for the 1563 publication of the Livre de la Conquête de la Toison d'Or.  Another plate with the scene of Queen Ino poisoning grain is in the Louvre (inv. no. 4021) together with three others from the set, which originally numbered twenty six, illustrating the story of Jason and painted on the back with the arms of Jean-Jacques de Mesnes (1490-1569).

A pair with scenes from the same series and numbered 18 and 25 but with the reverse again painted with the arms of Mesmes impaling those of the Dolu family were sold at Sotheby's in New York in January 2007, lot 240.

The backs on the present pair are painted with profile portraits with a band of fruit and a second band of foliate scrollwork.
