Description

  • an elegant family making music around a table, a dog in the foreground
  • oil on canvas, unlined
  • 114.5 by 166 cm.

Provenance

Property of a German Nobleman;
Sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 31 October- 1 November 2005, lot 1363.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined and detached from the stretcher in the lower right corner. The painted surface is under a very thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish and has been degraded. The paint surface is also very dry, which has resulted in some paint losses, e.g. along the upper and lower edges and in the centre left. two vertical stretcher (?) marks are visible running down the centre. Inspection under ultra violet light is largely impeded, but does reveal some discouoloured retouchings throughout. Offered in a plain wood frame, a few small damages(ML).
