Description

  • Johann Heiss
  • an allegory with vestal virgins, together with servants and dogs in a classical interior
  • signed and dated lower left: Heifs./1689.
  • oil on canvas, unframed
  • 135 by 207.4 cm.

Provenance

Property of a South German Noble Family;
Sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 31 October- 1 November 2005, lot 1317.

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone than the illustration in the catalogue suggests. The canvas has an old relining (glue). The paint surface has grown very dry, which has resulted in visible paint loss and flaking, e.g. in the figures to the left, in the upper left corner, along the left edge and in the upper right corner. Stretcher marks are visible to the front. The paint surface is under a very dirty old varnish layer, and would benefit greatly from a clean. The dirty varnish layer fluoresces completely under ultra violet light. A coarse craquelure pattern can be seen throughout and varies in places. Offered unframed. (ML/MW)
