Catalogue Note

The silver-gilt dressing table candlesticks are a gift of George, Duke of Cambridge, on the occasion of the marriage 21 December 1878, between Thyra Princess of Denmark and Ernest Augustus Prince of Hanover. Thyra (1853-1933) was the youngest daughter of Christian IX King of Denmark and married Ernest Augustus Crown Prince of Hanover (1845-1923), son of King George V by his Consort Queen Mary of Hanover. The marriage took place at Christiansborg Castle, Copenhagen 21 December 1878.

George Prince of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Cambridge (1819 - 1904) was born in Hanover. He was the only son of Adolphus Frederick Prince of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Cambridge and Viceroy of Hanover (1774-1850) by his wife, the former Princess Augusta of Hesse-Cassel. His grandfather was King George III and his cousin was Queen Victoria.
