Description

  • 1330gr., length of basin 35.7cm.
helmet shaped ewer and oval basin with reeded rim engraved with cypher of Mary Queen of Hanover, the basin also engraved Comtesse Charlotte Bremer, Hannover Friedrichstrasse; Friederike von Klenck, Herrenhausen, Mary von Reitzenstein, Hannover; Mary von Klenck, Gmunden, Georg von dem Busch, Gmunden (2)

Condition

In overall good condition, usual dents and scratches. Very legible marks, marked at the foot rim and reverse of the basin, the mark has been registered by Marc Rosenberg under 4655, but is not identifed.

Catalogue Note

The maker's mark of the silver has been registered by Marc Rosenberg (nr 4655), but not identified.

Mary Queen of Hanover Princess of Saxe-Altenburg (1818-1907) married George V King of Hanover on 18 November 1843. She was the eldest daughter of Joseph, Duke of Saxe -Altenburg: her full name being Alexandrine Mary Wilhelmine Catharine Charlotte Therese Henriette Louise Pauline Elisabeth Frederica Georgina. Her first-born son Ernest Augustus (1845-1923) succeeded his blind father as Head of the Royal House of Hanover. She died at Gmunden, Austria and was buried there, whereas her husband was laid to rest in St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1878.
