His sale, London, Sotheby's, 24 July 1929, lot 50;
With Asscher and Welcker, London;
With D. Katz, Dieren, 1937;
A.F. Philips, Eindhoven
Thence by descent.
The sitter has variously been identified as a member of the Capello family, or Admiral Giacomo Foscarini, Commissionary of Dalmatia, commander of the Venetian contingent to the Fleet of the Holy League against the Turks in 1572, the Battle of Lepanto.
It is possible that two similar versions exist and that they have been confused with each other. The heavily restored condition of this picture renders secure identification from old photographs hazardous.
