Venturi 1933

The painting is bluer and slightly lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been relined, which is rigid, but flat and stable. There is a restored and retouched vertical tear to the centre right, measuring about 25 cm, a large area of repaint to the lower left and centre. The canvas is covered with a thick layer of old but slightly discoloured varnish. The paint surface is in fair condition, although large areas of over paint and several discoloured retouches. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a restored hole to the upper centre, measuring approximately 4 by 5 cm, and extensive retouching to the lower centre. Offered in a remarkable 18th century elaborate carved and plaster gilt wood frame, in good condition, some chips. JS

The sitter has variously been identified as a member of the Capello family, or Admiral Giacomo Foscarini, Commissionary of Dalmatia, commander of the Venetian contingent to the Fleet of the Holy League against the Turks in 1572, the Battle of Lepanto.

It is possible that two similar versions exist and that they have been confused with each other.  The heavily restored condition of this picture renders secure identification from old photographs hazardous.
