Catalogue Note

This tripod is based on a Roman original found at Pompeij, now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples, see G.M. Richter The furniture of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans, London, 1966, p. 14, pl. 1. The original was the model for a tripod used at the baptism of Napoleon's son, the King of Rome in 1811 (now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). A tripod stand was also presented to the Empress Marie-Louise by the citizens of Milan in 1813, made entirely of lapis lazuli, and came from the workshop of Luigi and Franceso Manfredini, see G.M. Richter ante, p. 14, pl.2.

This type of stand was widely copied during the 18th and 19th century and was popular with Grand Tourists.
