Description

  • an allegory of the liberal arts;an allegory of wisdom defeating war
  • a pair, both oil on canvas
  • each: approx. 120.5 by 186 cm.

Provenance

Property from a Noble Estate;
Sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 31 October- 1 November 2005, lot 1336.

Condition

Both paintings are lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvasses appear to be unlined, with only a strip relining(?). Each picture has some thinner areas, mainly in the lower parts, as is also visible in the catalogue illustration. An allegory of the liberal arts: a repaired tear of approx. 10 by 10 cm. can be observed in the lower right corner and another vertical one of circa 9 cm. is visible along the right edge. The painted surface has grown dry, which has resulted in some paint losses, which have been coarsely overpainted. Retouchings can be seen throughout, especially in the figures. An allegory of Wisdom: the painted surface seems to have grown dry which has resulted in some paint losses in the upper centre, which have been coarsely overpainted. Some overpaint can be seen in the figures and trees as well. A few repaired damages can be observed in the centre. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals the retouchings as mentioned above. The painted surface is covered with a dirty varnish layer. Offered in modern wooden frames, a few chips. (ML)
