Condition

The actual paintings are a bit softer in tone than the illustration in the catalogue suggests. The painting with the parrot is oil on canvas laid down on board. A fold of the original canvas can be seen running from the left to the right edge in the lower half of the painting, as well as the original stretcher marks running vertically through the canvas. The paint surface is under very dirty varnish layer, but shows no major damages. The craquelure pattern is coarse but varies in places. Discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout, e.g. in the upper right in the sky, in the fruit and in the putti. Inspection under ultra violet light is partly impeded by the varnish but does reveal newer strenghtenings and retouchings, e.g. in the parrot, in the trees and in the foliage to the left. The latter painting with the monkey is oil on canvas, relined (wax). The paint surface seems to be in good condition, although has grown thin throughout. Stretcher marks are visible, as well as a fold of the canvas running from the left to the right edge in the lower half of the painting. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. The craquelure pattern is coarse but varies in places. Discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout, There is repaired damage in the upper right corner. This is confirmed by inspection under ultra violet light. Both paintings are offered in gilt wooden frames, apart from a few chips in good condition. (ML/MW)
