possibly Samson, modelled as a young lady seated on a grassy base surrounded by three figures, one playing bagpipe, one holding a draped rose-crowned pole, and one holding a titled shield, a further figure crowning her with a flower wreath, a girl holding a basket of flowers and arrows at her side, another girl weeping at the back of the group
Catalogue Note
The group is based on the book, Pamela or Virtue Rewarded (Pamela où la Vertu récompensée), a moral tale by Samuel Richardson published in 1740. It caused outrage when it was adapted for the stage in Paris at the Théatre de la Nation in 1793. In the story, a virtuous nobleman marries a young servant named Pamela, causing outrage amongst the anti-aristocratic establishment.
