oval, probably made to commemorate the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man, the lid inset with an oval miniature of Danton, lifting by means of a concealed mechanism to reveal a bawdy scene, the sides and base with further oval portraits including the marquis de Lafayette, Robespierre and Madame Roland, on a pale azure ground flanked by revolutionary symbols, the mounts chased with laurel swags and beads
