Catalogue Note

George Liddell Johnston was born in Sunderland in 1817, was ordained minister in 1849 and became chaplain to the British Embassy in Vienna. He retired in 1885 and died in 1902. These scenes reveal his typically disturbing predeliction of a bachelor clergyman for the macabre and grotesque.
