Catalogue Note

Agatha Christie's first published work, written in 1916, first published in the US by John Lane in October 1920 and in Britain by the Bodley Head in February 1921. The novel introduces Hercule Poirot, Chief Inspector Japp and Captain Hastings. The story, told in the first person, features all the elements that were to become staples of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction: the isolated country house, the half dozen suspects, the red herrings and the twists in the plot.
