Occult manuscripts.

Also Clavis Angelica Containing the 18 great Calls and Celestial Invocations of the Table of Enoch", transcribed by Fred Hockley, 90 pages, 4to; "Aureum Seculum Redivivum", by Henricus Madathanus, a translation into English ("The Golden Age Restored") from an edition of 1677, transcribed by Fred Hockley, 48 pages, plus blanks, 1849; "Clavis Arcana Magica" ("...Instructions for Divining by the Magic Crystal Revealed by the T.A. 9th May 1854..."), including four magic circles, 30 pages, plus blanks, 4to, 1849; "The Book of Solomon's called the Pauline Art Transcribed by Fred Hockley", with a number of diagrams and two large sigils, 88 pages, plus blanks, 4to, 1838; "Ars Notoria the Notory Art of Solomon Translated by Robert Turner 1656 Transcribed with additions by Fred Hockley 1839", 141 pages, 4to; spell book containing spells and occult learning from various sources, transcribed by Fred Hockley, with Hebrew text, sigils, and tables, 112 pages, plus blanks, c.1829; an untitled treatise on cartomancy, 23 pages, plus blanks, 13 February 1855, 4to; together with four modern volumes of photocopies and notes on occult subjects; all the Hockley volumes in half calf, most having ruled red borders and coloured title pages; one volume (Aureum Seculum Redivivum) with two leaves loose, bindings somewhat worn especially at joints (13)

Frederick Hockley (1808-85), who transcribed most of these volumes, was a crucial figure in nineteenth-century occult studies. Hockley was a Rosicruscian "seer" who engaged in scrying, and was also a student of alchemy. In later life he was a crucial source of occult knowledge for the first members of the Order of the Golden Dawn (see also Yeats, lot 161), and may have been partly responsible for the famed Golden Dawn Cypher manuscript. 38 of Hockley's manuscripts, including these, are identified by R.A. Gilbert; most were transcribed for John Denley, a bookseller specialising in occult books. At least three of these manuscripts (Aureum Seculum Redivivium, Clavis Arcana Magica, and Ars Notoria) remained in Hockley's own library, which was acquired by the occult publisher George Redway and dispersed by his assistant, Arthur Machen.
