first edition of Stapleton's translation of the Catechismus into Gaelic, in which he tried to simplify the orthography of the language; it is the first Catholic book to represent Gaelic letters with a roman typeface (it was preceded by a few Protestant works printed in Scotland in roman type).
Stapleton (1589-1647) was a priest from Cashel who studied at the Irish College in Salamanca before returning to Ireland to perform pastoral work. He is recorded as being at the court of Brussels in 1645 when presumably he arranged for the publication of this work.
