Catalogue Note

An important work of seventeenth-century Gaelic historiography, offering one of the best accounts of the Nine Years War from an Irish standpoint, drawing widely on the recollections of some of the principal players. Philip O'Sullivan Beare, nephew of Donal O'Sullivan Beare, the last independent ruler of the Sullivan sept in the west of Ireland, was born on the Beare Peninsula, Co. Cork around 1590. In 1602 he was sent to Santiago de Compostela to study with the Jesuit John Synnot, going on to serve with the Spanish navy and advising the Spanish crown on Irish affairs. He died in Spain in 1660.
