Catalogue Note

The most popular of the Kelmscott Books: upon publication this title quickly sold out.

The inscription from Le Gallienne reads "To Jim + Siss | a token of their unforgotten loving kindness | to | Mildred + Dick. | May 21, '94" A few months later Mildred Le Gallienne would be dead. The Oxford DNB notes that Mildred's early death in 1894 was "a sore blow... the emotional legacy of Le Gallienne's love for his first wife can be found in his subsequent fiction: she was, for example, the inspiration for the character of Angel in Young Lives (1899)"
