8vo, first english edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author to his father, dated 1 June 1884, on the front flyleaf describing this work as a "grandson in an intellectual sort of way", fine blue-green morocco by zaehnsdorf, dated 1905, gilt double fillet border, inner panel with gilt pointillĂ© ground and arabesque decoration of interlacing acanthas leaves punctuated with gilt and blind bubbles, central blank cartouche with fillet and pointillĂ© surround, spine gilt in six compartments, the second and third lettered, blue-green morocco doublures with a gilt triple-fillet and arabesque border, silk endpapers with gilt fillet border, Zaehnsdorf medallic mark on rear endpaper, top edge gilt, custom-made blue-green morocco box and lid, loosely inserted anonymous manuscript poem in on black bordered mourning paper dated July 1910 and entitled "In memoriam for dear Polly" (probably Holmes' younger daughter Mary Gaff Holmes, affectionately known as Polly, 1888-1910) light crease to front endpaper, very light spotting on front flyleaves, box rubbed
