Catalogue Note

Nugent Monck met Yeats in 1911 when they collaborated on a production of The Countess Cathleen at the Girl's High School in Norwich. Yeats was much taken with Monck's threatrical skills and brought him to the Abbey to train his acting companies. Monck also toured with the Abbey and appeared himself in several productions, including The Countess Cathleen in December of 1911. Although Lady Gregory was not so impressed with Monck as Yeats, and the inevitable squabbling with the actors led to his departure from the Abbey troupe, Monck remained a Yeats devotee and was producing Yeats plays well into the 1920s.
