Catalogue Note

This stunning series were published  once a month in 1902 and 1903 by Elkin Mathews and printed by Farncombe & Sons, Croydon. Each had two to four hand-coloured illustrations, mostly by Jack B. Yeats.

The set includes the first appearance in print of W.B. Yeats' 'Spinning Song' (later published as There are Seven that Pull the Thread) [see Wade p.331] and 'The Song of Red Hanrahan' (here untitled) [see Wade p.335]. A Broad Sheet also includes the first appearance of eight poems by John Masefield (including 'Cargoes') [see Errington C035.001 - C035.008].
